How to protect your gear through the cold season

Cold, wet months put every detail of your setup to the test.

Whether you’re a cyclist, skier, or motorbiker, winter is the season when your gear shows what it’s really made of.

Here’s how to keep it working and looking  at its best.

Clean smart, not just often

Salt, mud, and road grime can silently wear down components.

A gentle wash with warm water and a neutral bike cleaner after each ride prevents corrosion without damaging paint or decals.

Avoid high-pressure jets near bearings and seals:

 precision over power always wins.

Keep moisture where it belongs: outside

Condensation is a winter classic.

Store your bike or gear in a dry, ventilated space, and never cover it with plastic after a wet ride.

If you use indoor trainers, wipe frames and bars regularly

sweat and humidity can corrode faster than rain.

Choose materials that resist, not react

Winter is the time when quality materials pay off.

Look for components and accessories designed for low temperatures and moisture.

Stickers, for example, should be made from 0.9 mm raised vinyl flexible enough to adhere perfectly and tough enough to resist

UV light, rain, and washing cycles for years.

Lubrication: a small ritual that saves big repairs

Cold air thickens oil and grease, which can slow down shifting and pedalling.

Use winter-specific lubricants on your chain and pivots.

It’s a small effort that prevents rust, noise, and premature wear:

the kind of maintenance that pays off quietly.

Routine checks for peace of mind

Before every ride, spend two minutes checking brakes, tyres, and lights.

It’s not paranoia, it’s care.

Winter routes are less forgiving, and the smallest detail can make the biggest difference.

A well-kept setup means freedom to ride with confidence.

Keep your setup winter-proof and let every detail reflect the rider you are.
